Common Household Dangers for Pets
Your home should be a safe haven for your pets, but many common items can pose a serious threat. Being aware of these potential dangers is the first step in creating a pet-safe environment.
Human Foods
Many foods we enjoy are toxic to pets. Keep the following away from your furry friends:
- Chocolate: Especially dark chocolate, which is highly toxic.
- Grapes and Raisins: Can cause kidney failure in dogs.
- Onions, Garlic, and Chives: Can damage red blood cells.
- Xylitol: An artificial sweetener found in many sugar-free products that is extremely toxic to dogs.
Household Plants
Many popular houseplants are poisonous to cats and dogs. Before bringing a new plant home, check if it's safe. Common toxic plants include lilies, tulips, sago palms, and aloe vera.
Cleaning Supplies & Chemicals
Keep all cleaning products, antifreeze, pesticides, and medications securely stored and out of reach. Even small amounts can be lethal if ingested.
If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, contact your veterinarian or an emergency pet hospital immediately.
